28mm American Civil War Miniatures: Grant and the Iron Brigade by Davide Miniatures

Davide Miniatures has shared a series of beautifully finished 28mm Battle Honours 3D American Civil War figures, including General Ulysses S. Grant and troops representing the 6th Wisconsin of the Iron Brigade.

Ulysses S. Grant

Grant's Civil War career took him from major victories in the western theatre to overall command of the United States armies. After the capture of Vicksburg and victory at Chattanooga, President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to lieutenant general and placed him in command of all Union armies in March 1864. Grant then coordinated Union operations across several theatres while travelling with the Army of the Potomac through the Overland Campaign, Petersburg and the final pursuit of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

On 9 April 1865, Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Grant at Appomattox Court House, one of the defining events in the closing stages of the war.

The Iron Brigade and the 6th Wisconsin

The Iron Brigade became one of the best-known formations in the Union Army. Its core included the 2nd, 6th and 7th Wisconsin Infantry, the 19th Indiana and 24th Michigan, with Battery B of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery also closely associated with the brigade. It fought in major engagements including Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Gettysburg.

The brigade's reputation was hard earned. Wisconsin Historical Society records note that no Wisconsin regiments suffered heavier losses or became more widely known. The distinctive black Hardee hats worn by the western regiments also make the Iron Brigade immediately recognisable on a tabletop.
