  • 3 cavalry miniatures on horseback

This set depicts Confederate cavalry trotting with carbines, representing mounted troops equipped for reconnaissance, screening, raiding and mobile firepower during the American Civil War.

Historical background: Confederate cavalry and carbines

Cavalry served as the eyes and ears of Civil War armies. Confederate horsemen scouted ahead of marching columns, watched enemy movements, screened friendly forces, carried messages, guarded routes and supply trains, and conducted raids against railways, communications and depots.

Although popular imagery often focuses on dramatic mounted charges, cavalry frequently fought dismounted. Horses gave troopers the speed to reach an important position quickly, after which they could dismount and use carbines to fight as mobile skirmishers. The shorter length of a carbine made it easier to carry on horseback than a full infantry rifle.

Confederate cavalry armament was far from uniform. Southern troopers used a mixture of imported, captured and domestically produced weapons, including shorter muzzle-loading arms and copies of Federal breech-loading carbines. Supply shortages meant that equipment could vary significantly between units and campaigns.

The trotting poses in this set suit patrols, reconnaissance screens, column escorts and cavalry moving into position before a dismounted firefight. They can also be used for raids or campaign scenes where mounted troops are moving at a controlled pace rather than charging.
