The Role of US Paratroopers in WW2
US Airborne forces played a key role in the European theatre, particularly during the Normandy landings in June 1944. Troops from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions parachuted behind enemy lines the night before D-Day to disrupt German reinforcements, seize vital bridges, and sow confusion. Despite scattered drops and heavy resistance, they succeeded in their objectives and became a symbol of elite American infantry.
They later fought in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhineland campaign—often outnumbered, lightly supplied, and facing veteran German troops. Their distinctive uniforms, M1 carbines, BAR teams, and bazookas became synonymous with tough, mobile warfare.
