Jasmine has been working on our French 4-Horse Limber, Bicorne, Trotting, supplied in 75 mm, and the finished result brings together the horses, riders, harness and limber into a substantial Napoleonic artillery piece.
The French Artillery Train
The horses and riders behind a Napoleonic artillery battery were an essential part of how the guns actually reached the battlefield.
Napoleon militarised the French artillery train in 1800, creating the Train d'Artillerie to provide trained military drivers responsible for transporting guns, limbers, ammunition caissons and other artillery equipment.
French artillery horses were normally harnessed in pairs, with the driver riding the left-hand horse and controlling both animals in the pair. Four-horse teams were used for many French field guns and their associated limbers, while heavier 12-pounder guns required six horses.
This makes a limber team far more than background scenery. On a Napoleonic battlefield, the ability to move artillery into position, withdraw it when threatened and reposition batteries as the battle developed directly affected how effectively the guns could be used.
A 75mm Napoleonic Centrepiece
At 75 mm, the size of the models gives plenty of room for the details of the horse furniture, harness, uniforms and equipment to be seen.
Jasmine's photographs show this particularly well. The four horses form a long moving column, while the mounted drivers, bicorne headgear and limber behind them give the finished set a strong sense of movement.
The trotting poses also work well for representing an artillery team moving towards a new position rather than simply standing behind a deployed battery.
For a larger-scale Napoleonic collection or display, a limber team can sit alongside guns and artillery crews to show the part of the battery that is often missing once the guns have been deployed.
It can also form part of a marching French army, a moving artillery column or a larger diorama showing troops and equipment travelling during a campaign.
