British forces in the Second World War
By 1944, British formations had accumulated experience from campaigns in North Africa, the Mediterranean and elsewhere. On D-Day, British troops landed on Gold and Sword beaches, while 6th Airborne Division operated on the eastern flank of the Normandy bridgehead. Commandos and Royal Marines also played important roles in amphibious and raiding operations.
