At Battle Honours 3D, we’re dedicated to producing historically accurate, true-scale figures for serious wargamers and collectors. Our cavalry range stands out for its commitment to detail and size accuracy, ensuring that light and heavy cavalry are true to historical measurements. Whether you're adding to a Napoleonic or American Civil War collection, you’ll find our models provide the consistency you need for realistic, immersive gameplay.
Scale Accuracy: Key to Our Cavalry Range
Our models are crafted to exact scale, meaning a 28mm figure is precisely 28mm from the base of the foot to the bridge of the nose. This precise scaling ensures that each figure reflects the correct historical proportions, especially for cavalry where the size and build of horses vary between heavy and light units. Historically, heavy cavalry horses were larger and sturdier, while light cavalry used smaller, more agile horses. This differentiation is reflected in our range, so your battlefield recreations can be as true-to-life as possible.
Accurate Historical Horse Sizes
It’s a common misconception that war horses in the Napoleonic and Civil War eras were as tall as many of today’s breeds. In reality, horses used in these periods were generally smaller than modern war horses. As noted in historical sources like the Napoleon Series, typical cavalry horses were between 14 to 15 hands tall (142–152 cm at the withers). This measurement is noticeably shorter than today’s larger breeds, which can exceed 16 hands (around 163 cm).
Our cavalry models reflect these historical sizes accurately, with heavy cavalry appearing more robust while remaining true to historical dimensions. This attention to detail allows you to portray units more authentically, matching the actual look and feel of the period.
How to Measure Models for Accurate Scale
For the best results when expanding your collection, we recommend measuring any existing models to ensure compatibility with our figures. Measuring figures accurately is key to consistency across your collection, so here’s how to do it:
- For Standing Figures: Measure from the base of the figure’s foot to the bridge of the nose. This provides an accurate height for true-scale figures, like infantry or standing soldiers.
- For Mounted Figures (Horses): Measure from the base of the foot to the withers, which is the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades. Historical cavalry horse heights were recorded from the withers, not the head, as this ensures a standard comparison across breeds and types.
Following these measurement methods gives you a consistent reference point, ensuring that every model fits seamlessly with others in your collection.
New Support Removal Option for Easy Assembly
To further enhance our models, we now offer a support removal option for all figures. This means you can choose between purchasing figures with ‘Supports Attached’ or ‘Supports Removed,’ depending on your needs. The support removal option is ideal if you want figures that are ready to play and paint straight out of the box. We’ve taken care to remove the supports without sacrificing any detail, making it easier for you to start using or painting your figures immediately.
For those who prefer a budget-friendly option, we still offer figures with supports attached. This lets you handle the support removal yourself, which can be a satisfying part of the assembly process for experienced hobbyists. Whichever option you choose, all our models are made with a durable resin blend that provides strength and flexibility to avoid brittleness and keep even the finest details intact.
Custom Orders for Other Manufacturers’ Scales
We understand that collectors often have models from a variety of sources. To make sure our figures integrate seamlessly with your existing collection, we’re more than happy to produce custom figures to fit other manufacturers' scales. Simply get in touch with your requirements, and we’ll work with you to provide figures that match both size and style, ensuring compatibility across your collection.
