ACW Confederate skirmish infantry represent troops operating ahead of the main battle line, using cover and open order to screen formations and engage enemy skirmishers. Skirmishing was a regular part of Civil War battlefield tactics.
Rifled muskets increased the value of dispersed troops who could harass an enemy before larger formations became engaged. Use these figures for picket lines, woods, fences, rough ground and scenario objectives, or mix them with formed infantry to show the transition from skirmish screen to full battle.
