A Centrepiece for D-Day Wargaming

A Centrepiece for D-Day Wargaming

The Ouistreham Casino by Battle Honours 3D is a historically significant terrain piece that offers both gameplay functionality and strong visual presence. Based on the real fortified casino building in the French seaside town of Ouistreham, this model recreates one of the most recognisable defensive structures on Sword Beach during the Normandy landings.

The actual casino was located on the eastern flank of the invasion beaches, near the mouth of the Orne River and the Caen Canal. By 1944, it had been heavily fortified by the Germans and incorporated into the Atlantic Wall. Its windows were bricked up, machine gun nests were added, and the entrance was protected by reinforced bunkers. During the assault on Sword Beach on 6 June 1944, British commandos of No. 4 Commando, under Lord Lovat, landed in Ouistreham with the objective of clearing the town and linking up with airborne forces at Pegasus Bridge.

This model captures those details: a bricked-up façade, split-level bunker entrance, and commanding roofline. Howard has brought this to life with a careful paint job that makes the architectural detail stand out. A dark wash has been used to deepen the mortar and brick lines, while a dry brush highlights the raised areas of stonework and brick texture. The slightly weathered sign at the top gives it character and makes it stand out as a strategic objective on the table.

The upper roof is removable, allowing access to the interior, ideal for close-quarters firefights, objectives, or sniper positions in rulesets like Bolt Action, Chain of Command, and Flames of War. It works just as well for static defence or staged assaults in D-Day scenarios.

Scenario Use Cases:

  • Defend the town centre during the Sword Beach assault

  • British Commando objective as part of Lord Lovat’s landing mission

  • Strongpoint for German 716th Infantry Division resisting coastal invasion

  • Urban clearance scenario leading to Pegasus Bridge

  • Late-game fallback or HQ location in inland push scenarios
